In Sweden, population statistics have been kept since the 18th century. The population, which was previously presented for towns and country, is now presented for built-up areas and rural areas. The historical statistics in the table are taken from the Statistics Sweden publication Historical Statistics for Sweden, Part 1. The town is no longer an administrative unit and is now included in each municipality. The population is given for municipalities and built-up areas.
