Explanation

To be registered as an immigrant, an individual must intend to stay in Sweden for at least one year. To be registered as an emigrant ,an individual must intend to live abroad for at least one year.
The immigration year is defined as the year in which immigration was registered in the population register kept by the Swedish Tax Administration. The immigration year always refers to the most recent registered immigration.
Re-immigration refers to a return to Sweden after being resident abroad and re-emigration refers to immigration, followed by another departure from Sweden. Reported as immigrant.
Refugees whose applications are still being processed are not included in the statistics, neither as immigrants nor as foreign citizens in the population. Those who are not granted residence permits and who leave the country as a result are also not included among the emigrants.
